🐾 Booking a Vacation Rental with a Service Animal: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning a Smoky Mountain Lake Vacation with a service animal, here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth and stress-free stay.

The DO’s of Traveling with a Service Animal

✔️ Do Inform Your Host in Advance
While you’re not required to disclose a service animal ahead of time under the ADA, giving your host a heads-up is always a good idea. It allows us to prepare the property (and even offer recommendations) to better accommodate your needs.

✔️ Do Know Your Rights
Service animals are not pets—they’re trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities, and are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This means no pet fees, no breed restrictions, and no denial of access to ADA-compliant rentals.

If you are bringing a service animal to one of our homes, then you need to be prepared to answer some questions.

When it’s not obvious that a dog is a service animal, staff at public accommodations (like restaurants, stores, hotels) are allowed to ask only two specific questions to determine if the dog is a legitimate service animal, as per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):
  1. “Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?”
  2. “What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?”
Important points:
  • These are the only questions you are allowed to ask.
  • You cannot ask for documentation.
  • You cannot ask the dog to demonstrate its task.
  • You cannot ask about the person’s disability.
Why are these the only questions allowed?

The ADA aims to balance the rights of individuals with disabilities to access public spaces with the needs of businesses to ensure safety and order. The two questions are designed to help differentiate between legitimate service animals and pets, while protecting the privacy of individuals with disabilities.

✔️ Do Keep Your Animal Under Control

Bringing your pup along for your lake vacation? Here’s what you need to know to keep your furry friend safe—and stay on the right side of the law!

🦴 General Leash Rules in Tennessee

  • Public Places: Dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times.

  • Private Property: Pets should be under “reasonable control” even if not leashed.

  • Strict Liability: Dog owners are liable for injuries caused by dogs running loose or not controlled properly.

  • Hunting & Herding: Dogs may be off-leash during legal activities like hunting or herding.

🐕 Off-Leash Dog Parks

Tennessee offers designated dog parks where your pup can run free—within a fenced area.

  • Leash up when entering/exiting the park.

  • Dogs must wear ID tags.

  • Supervision is required at all times.

  • Example: In Nashville, leash laws still apply outside the fenced zone.

🌳 Pets in Tennessee State Parks

  • Dogs must be leashed or physically controlled.

  • Some spots (like beaches or food areas) may not allow pets.

  • Never leave pets unattended in vehicles or campsites.

⚠️ Penalties for Breaking Leash Laws

  • Fines: Violations can lead to financial penalties.

  • Repeat Offenses: Could result in restrictions or even impoundment.

  • Liability: You may be held financially responsible for damages or injuries.

💡 Tip: Before visiting any park or lakefront, check local rules or ask your host. And always pack the leash—just in case.

✔️ Do Bring the Essentials

Even though your furry partner is welcome, don’t forget to pack crate, food, bedding, waste bags, and any other supplies your service animal might need during the trip.

🚫 The DON’Ts of Traveling with a Service Animal

❌ Don’t Misrepresent an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) as a Service Animal

ESAs are important companions, but they are not considered service animals under the ADA. If you’re traveling with an ESA, make sure the rental is pet-friendly and confirm policies with the host.

❌ Don’t Leave Your Service Animal Unattended in the Rental for Long Periods

Most rentals ask that pets (and service animals, if applicable) not be left alone unless they’re safely crated. Even a well-trained animal can become distressed in a new space.

❌ Don’t Assume All Rentals Are Equal

ADA laws apply, but it’s still wise to double-check the home’s layout and features. Need a ramp, a no-stairs entry, or a yard for easy access? Just let us know—we’ll help you find the perfect match.

💡 Bonus Tip: Be a Courteous Guest

While service animals are legally allowed, a little extra communication goes a long way. Hosts appreciate when guests leave the property tidy and pet-related cleanup is taken care of. It helps keep doors open for all future travelers with service animals.
